BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo football team dropped a heartbreaking loss to Troy, 21-17, at UB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans scored the game-winning touchdown with just 45 seconds left in the game.
James McNeil, Jr. scored on a one-yard touchdown run, midway through the first quarter, to put the Bulls ahead, 7-0. The score remained 7-0 until halftime, thanks to a stout defensive effort by the Bulls that included six first-half sacks.
The Bulls took a 14-0 lead with 9:12 left in the third quarter on an Al-Jay Henderson 22-yard touchdown run. Henderson finished with 75 rushing yards and scored a touchdown in his third straight game.
The Bulls tacked on a 39-yard field goal by Jack Howes to take a 17-0 lead. However, during that scoring drive, starting quarterback Ta'Quan Roberson left the game with an injury and was replaced by Gunnar Gray.
Troy battled back to score three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take the lead. With 45 seconds on the clock, Gray led the Bulls down to the Troy 29-yard line but his pass to the endzone, in the final seconds, was knocked away.
Dion Crawford and Red Murdock led the UB defense with 12 tackles apiece and combined for three sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. Murdock had two forced fumbles in the game to move into eighth place in NCAA history in career forced fumbles with 13.
The Bulls will remain at home and host Connecticut next Saturday at 3:30 pm.
