BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo wide receiver Taji Johnson is among 178 nominees for the 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the organization has announced. Awarded to community champions, it recognizes student-athletes who display exemplary community service, academic dedication and impact on and off the field. Beginning this year, Allstate is partnering with the Wuerffel Foundation to bring together two of the most meaningful awards in college football.
Since joining the UB football program in January, Johnson wasted little time impacting the Western New York community. Through Engaged Athlete Fellowship, Johnson has aimed to impact the lives of local students hoping to inspire them to attend college. He began a program titled "A Day in the Life" where he invited local students to experience a day on UB's campus, visiting classrooms and interacting with current students, hoping to serve as inspiration.
"Student-athletes deserve recognition for their contributions both in and out of sports" said Troy Hawkes, Allstate executive vice president and general manager. "The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy doubles down on Allstate's commitment to celebrating college football athletes for outstanding performance on the field, in the classroom, and in their community."
This is the third straight year Johnson has earned the nomination. He was nominated each of the last two seasons while at Boston College.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. From the 178 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients will be selected in September and will bring together 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and one honorary head coach. To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining strong academic standing.
All members of the final Allstate AFCA Good Works Team team are selected by a voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists who look for exceptional leadership on and off the field.
The 2024 football season kicks off on Aug. 29 against Lafayette at UB Stadium. Season tickets for the 2024 season are available. Click here for more information.
