CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday that Marialis Kwak of the University at Buffalo swimming and diving team was selected as this week's MAC Diver of the Week. The senior diver has now won the award three times this season.
Kwak won both the one-meter (295.20) and three-meter finals (304.95) at Akron's Zippy Invite, extending her streak in the diving well to eight straight individual wins since the beginning of the season. The senior's final score of 304.95 in the three-meter was a season-best. Kwak took first place in both preliminary rounds too, the one-meter (300.45) and three-meter (304.70). The senior was also a member of the Bulls' first-place team diving trio, scoring 296.80.
Kwak's third Diver of the Week award enters her into historic territory. The senior becomes the third swimmer or diver in program history to win three or more Athlete of the Week awards in a single season since the conference began announcing the honor in 2009. Kwak joins Brittney Kuras (13-14) and Victoria Franz (21-22 & 23-24).
Franz, a five-year diver for the Bulls, holds the record for the most Athlete of the Week awards in a season, winning the honor six times last season. Kwak has the opportunity to tie Franz's program record, with three more meets scheduled for the Bulls ahead of MAC Championships. Buffalo is set to host this year's conference championships from February 26th through March 1st in the Alumni Arena Natatorium.
Kwak and the Bulls are next in action when they host the UB Diving Invite from January 10th through January 12th. The Buffalo swimmers will compete on January 11th at Duquesne in a head-to-head competition. A complete schedule of UB Swim and Dive can be accessed here.
