BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo linebacker Shaun Dolac has been named one of three finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on, the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation announced on Tuesday.
Dolac is joined on the list of finalists by James Carpenter, a defensive lineman from Indiana, and Bryce Boettcher, a linebacker from Oregon.
Dolac began his UB career as a walk-on in 2020. Prior to the 2021 season, the West Seneca, NY native was awarded a scholarship. Also a semifinalist for the award in 2022, Dolac is currently enjoying the best season of his career. He leads the nation in tackles with 137 and has added 12.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions and four pass breakups. He has been named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week four times this season – the most ever in a single season by a UB player.
He ranks seventh in program history with 360 career tackles and fifth in solo tackles with 206.
A multiple Academic All-MAC selection, Dolac has proven to not only be a standout on the football field, but in the classroom as well.
Dolac is the first UB player to be named a finalist for the award.
A ceremony to select the winner will be held on December 9 in Bentonville, AR.
