BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo and head football coach Maurice Linguist have agreed to a one-year contract extension, Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt announced on Thursday. The extension will keep the second-year head coach in Buffalo through the 2026 season.
"Following my evaluation of Coach Linguist after one full year on the job, it became very apparent that he deserved a contract extension," Alnutt said. "Having the opportunity to have a full cycle to build our program was critical. His and his staff's ability to fully engage in the recruiting calendar, develop our team in the offseason through winter and summer workouts and spring football, emphasize academic excellence and community engagement is proof that our program is headed in the right direction. The future of UB football is very bright under Coach Linguist's leadership. I look forward to working with Coach Linguist for a very long time."
Taking over the UB football program in May, missing the entire spring practice period, Linguist was able to lead the Bulls to four wins in his first season at the helm. Following the 2021 campaign, Linguist, known as one of the best recruiters in the nation, was able to assemble the top recruiting class in the Mid-American Conference and highest-rated class in program history.
Off the field, the Bulls had a record 19 Academic All-MAC selections in 2021 and this past spring, posted a 2.927 grade point average, the fourth highest in program history. In addition, the team has logged over 300 hours of community service.
The Bulls drew a record crowd of over 2,500 for their spring game this past April and over the summer more than 1,000 youngsters participated in their football camps.
"I want to thank President Satish Tripathi, Mark Alnutt and the entire UB administration for their confidence and belief in what we are doing as a football program," Linguist said. "An extension is something I'm proud of as a head coach, but it speaks to our assistant coaches, the young men in our lockeroom and everybody involved with UB football for the direction the program is heading and the confidence that we all have in where we are going.
"My wife, Stacie, my son, Lance, and my daughter, Maura, love living in Buffalo and love the UB experience. We feel rooted and connected to the community and to the city. We couldn't be more excited about the future we have with Buffalo football, the university and our family as a whole."
