The Bulls scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-7 lead. UB used big plays by all facets of their team, offense, defense and special teams.
Buffalo got on the board first five minutes into the game when C.J. Bazille blocked a field goal attempt, recovered the ball and scampered 90 yards for a touchdown. Old Dominion answered with a touchdown to tie the game late in the first quarter. However, the second quarter was all UB.
Quarterback Kyle Vantrease called his own number for a four-yard touchdown run to put the Bulls ahead, 14-7. The Bulls scored again on its next possession when Vantrease connected with Quian Williams for a 13-yard touchdown.
Williams had the best game of his UB career with nine catches for 134 yards. He had seven catches for 120 yards in the first half alone.
Dylan McDuffie scored on a 20-yard touchdown run up the middle to extend the UB lead to 28-7. McDuffie was the Bulls leading rusher in the game with 59 yards on 16 carries.
Just over a minute later, Tim Terry scooped up a fumble and dashed 67 yards for yet another score. The Bulls led 35-7 at the half.
Old Dominion roared back, scoring twice in the third quarter to cut the lead to 35-21. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Monarchs scored again to cut the UB advantage to seven.
On Old Dominion's next possession, it looked like the Monarchs might score again, but James Patterson ripped the ball loose near the goal line and Daymond Williams recovered, giving the ball back to the Bulls at their own 3-yard line with 3:03 left.
Old Dominion had one last chance, and with 19 seconds left, connected on a touchdown pass to pull within one point. However, an unsportsmanlike penalty pushed the extra point attempt back 15 yards and was missed, allowing the Bulls to hold on for the one-point victory.
Max Michel was one four Bulls with 10 tackles in the game and he added 1.5 sacks. Cory Gross, Marcus Fuqua and Kadofi Wright also added 10 stops, career-highs for each player.
Buffalo opens conference play against Western Michigan next Saturday.
