INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The 2020 United States Olympic Diving Trials were announced last week. University at Buffalo sophomore diver Victoria Franz was selected to participate at this year's trials. Franz qualified for the 3-meter dive where 26 other divers across the country will participate.
The only other UB diver to qualify for Olympic Trials was school record holder Meili Carpenter in 2012 for the London Olympics.
"Qualifying for [Olympic] Trials is something I have wanted since I was little," stated Franz. "I just feel so incredibly blessed to have achieved this opportunity, especially during such a challenging time. To be able represent UB and the Western New York area on a national level fills me with gratitude. I am so honored to represent both my hometown and my school. Getting to compete at Olympic Trials is exciting, but knowing you have a huge support system at home cheering you on makes it so much more amazing."
Franz won the silver medal in both the 1 and 3-meter dives at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Championships in April.
"Qualifying for Olympic Trials was a goal of hers from the time I coached her at the club level, prior to coming to UB," stated UB Head Diving Coach Russ Dekker. "Nothing makes a coach happier that seeing an athlete accomplish a goal that they set for themselves at a young age. I am so proud of her and all the hard work she has put in. She leads by example and brings so many good attributes with her to the pool every day. After the season that we had, with all the accolades and a MAC Championship, I didn't think it could get much better. This is definitely the cherry on top of an already great season!"
The U.S. Olympic Diving Trials for the 3-meter dive is on Tuesday, June 8 in the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis. For more information, click here.
