BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo baseball rising senior relief pitcher Blair Lakso will be leaving the Bulls after signing a professional contract with the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon. Lakso completed a spectacular summer performance with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League to earn his chance at the next level.
The hard-throwing righty appeared in 17 games and pitched in 23.2 innings while striking out 22 batters over his two-year UB career. His k/9 ratio of 8.38 led the Bulls last season while striking out 18 batters over 19 innings of work.
Lakso got his chance at the next level because of a strong summer league performance in the best summer league in the country, the Northwoods League. The righty finished off his impressive summer leading his team to a league championship as he went 6-0 with a team-best 1.40 ERA while striking out 40 batters in 32 innings of work and only walking 12.
Lakso becomes the second Bull this season to sign a professional contract, joining Mike Kaelin who was drafted in the 15th round by the Los Angeles Angels. The Bulls currently have five former student-athletes playing in the minor leagues with Tom Murphy and Steve Geltz at the Triple A level while Mike Burke, Nick Sinay and Kaelin all playing in Single A.
