BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo baseball team fell in 12 innings for the second straight game on Wednesday afternoon at Amherst Audobon Field to the Canisius Golden Griffins by the score of 3-1. With the loss, the Bulls drop to 11-21 overall and 4-8 in the MAC.
The Bulls had the first chance to score in the second inning as Brian Wasilewski, Kyle Brennan and Brian Dudek earned three straight walks to load the bases with one out. The Bulls couldn't cross a runner across home as they grounded into a pair of fielder's choices to end the threat.
The Golden Griffins responded in the top of the third with the first run of the game after the Bulls got the first two outs quickly. The rally started after an UB error and a double from the Griffs to give them two on with two out. The next two batters each worked walks to force home the first run of the game.
After five great innings from UB starter Brandon Mumaw, Blair Lakso set the Griffs down in order in the sixth. The Bulls were able to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as Alex Thrower earned a walk and stole second base before being replaced by Alec Tuohy after sustaining an injury. Bobby Sheppard then dug in and ripped a triple to deep right field to score Tuohy from second, his first career run scored, to tie the game.
Lakso was able to work out of a jam in the eighth inning as the Griffs loaded the bases with no outs. After a force out at home to get the first out of the inning, Lakso forced Ryan Stekl to ground into an inning ending double play.
After three scoreless innings, the Griffs were able to cross two runs across home plate to take the 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 12th inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Charlie Sobieraski earned a walk in his first plate appearance of the season but the Bulls were not able to score the tying run, falling 3-1.
Mumaw had a great outing for the Bulls as he went 5.0 innings and allowed just five hits, one unearned run and three strikeouts in the no decision. Lakso went 3.0 innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three batters while Logan Harasta went 2.0 hitless innings in the loss.
Wasilewski collected his first career two-hit game in the loss as he finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Sheppard finished off his game going 1-for-5 with the lone RBI while also contributing seven assists in the field. Tuohy scored the lone UB run as he made his second pinch running appearance of the season.
The Bulls return to the diamond this weekend as they head to Northern Illinois for a three-game set. Game one of the series will take place on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm. Alec Tuohy will toe the rubber for the Bulls in the opening game of the series.
