ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team was swept in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Fred Handler Park in St. Bonaventure, NY by the Bonnies. The Bulls dropped game one by the score of 2-1 before being handed a 9-2 loss in the nightcap. UB falls to 8-13 overall and 2-1 in MAC play.
GAME 1 – BUFFALO 1, St. Bonaventure 2
After a quick 1-2-3 inning for the Bulls to start the game, the Bonnies got on the board in the bottom half of the first with a pair of runs. After a single and a walk gave St. Bonaventure a pair of runners on base, Tyler Walter ripped a double down the right field line to score a run and Aaron Phillips notched a sacrifice fly to deep right field to give the Bonnies the 2-0 lead.
The Bulls got on the board early in the top of the third inning as Brian Dudek doubled to center field and advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder. Alex Thrower then dug in and hit an RBI ground out to shortstop to score Dudek, his fourth run of the season.
The Bulls would then threaten to score the game-tying run in the fifth inning as Dudek and Thrower recorded back-to-back singles up the middle but UB wasn't able to force the tying run in. Next time up, Ben Haefner notched a double to right center field and Chris Kwitzer was hit by a pitch but after the Bonnies pitching change the Bulls went down swinging to end the threat in the sixth.
Starting pitcher Brandon Mumaw pitched great after allowing two runs in the first inning as he only allowed three hits through the final six innings of the game. In the Bulls final at bats, Thrower singled to right field with two outs to give the Bulls a chance but after he stole second base to get into scoring position, Bobby Sheppard flew out to deep center field to end the game.
Thrower finished the game going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI while Dudek also went 2-for-3 with the lone UB run. Kwitzer singled to extend his current hitting streak to six games.
Mumaw finished off his strong effort going six innings while allowing five hits, two runs and striking out two in his fourth loss of the season.
GAME 2 – BUFFALO 2, St. Bonaventure 9
The Bulls wasted no time getting on the board in game two on Wednesday afternoon as Bobby Sheppard and Ben Haefner opened the game with back-to-back singles. After a double play moved Sheppard to third base, Vinny Mallaro notched his first hit of the day, an infield single to third, to score the UB shortstop from third base and take the 1-0 lead.
The Bonnies responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning on three hits. St. Bonaventure opened up the game with three hits and a walk to score a run before a double play forced another run across and a wild pitch capped the inning with the Bonnies third run.
The Bonnies were able to add a run in the second inning to take the 4-1 lead after a UB error led to an unearned run for starter Blair Lakso. After a fielder's choice gave SBU two runners on, a ground out allowed the two runners to move up a base and a wild pitch scored the runner from third for the unearned run.
The St. Bonaventure lead was pushed to four, 5-1, in the bottom of the third inning as a sacrifice ground out scored the runner from third. In the fourth, the Bonnies scratched across two more runs behind two hits to take the commanding 7-1 lead.
The Bulls made the score 7-2 in the top of the sixth inning as Ben Haefner and Brian Wasilewski walked and Don Kilian singled to load the bases. Ben Vey then earned a walk to force in Haefner for his 10th run of the season.
The Bonnies then added two more runs in the sixth to put the game away, earning the doubleheader sweep with a 9-2 final score.
The Bulls offense was only able to produce five hits in game two while the Bonnies had 10 for the game. Mallaro collected his 18th RBI of the season while Vey earned his sixth run batted in of the season.
The Bulls will return to the diamond this weekend as they play host to Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan on Friday and Saturday. The game on Friday will be a doubleheader starting at noon and will be played at Fred Handler Park in St. Bonaventure, NY. Alec Tuohy (3-2, 2.92 ERA) will take the mound for game one and Charlie Sobieraski (4-1, 6.29 ERA) will be pitching game two for the Bulls.
