Bulls Split Two Duals in Two States on Saturday

FAIRFIELD, CT – The University at Buffalo, the State University of New York wrestling team split a pair of duals on Saturday, defeating Sacred Heart, 32-6, and losing a close one to Columbia, 18-15. The win over Sacred Heart was the Bulls seventh victory of the season, matching their most wins since the 2011-12 season.
It was a busy day for the Bulls as they wrestled two duals in two different states. UB started the day with an 11 am match at Columbia in New York City, followed by a 7 pm dual at Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CT.
The Bulls took eight of the ten matches to earn a decisive victory over the Pioneers in the nightcap. After Kyle Akins earned a 9-5 decision to start the dual, Bryan Lantry registered his third pin of the season, in the third period, to extend the UB lead to 9-0.
An 11-2 major decision by Brandon Lapi over Alex Harnsberger extended the UB advantage to 13-0. Colt Cotten followed with a major decision of his own - defeating Brandon Levesque, 8-0.
Rrok Ndokaj earned his first dual victory of the season with a 5-1 decision over Matt Fisher at 165 lbs. Muhamed McBryde sealed the victory with an 11-2 major decision over Johnny Vrasidas.
Joe Ariola won a 5-2 decision over Elliott Antler and Jake Gunning finished the night with a 19-4 tech fall over Ray Sherwood.
In the first dual of the day, the Bulls jumped out to a 12- 3 lead over Columbia as Akins (11-3), Lapi (9-1) and Cotten (10-0) all earned major decisions. However, the Lions took decisions in the next three matches to take a 15-12 lead with two matches left.
James Benjamin earned a 4-0 decision to tie the dual at 15 all with one match remaining. Unfortunately for the Bulls, Garrett Ryan won, 8-4, over Gunning to seal it for the Lions.
"It was a tough trip, but coming out of here 7-6 with our conference schedule ahead of us is exciting," head coach John Stutzman. "Lapi, Cotton and Akins led the day."
