BUFFALO, NY - Former University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball standout Tom Murphy earned his first Major League Baseball call up on Friday afternoon to the Colorado Rockies. The reliable catcher joined the Rockies in Seattle on Friday night prior to their game with the Mariners.
Murphy collected a .256 batting average to go along with 20 homers and 63 RBI's in the minors this season as he split time between AA New Britian and AAA Albuquerque. He also scored 55 runs while throwing out 30 percent of base stealers in the minors.
Murphy left Buffalo as its career leader in slugging percentage (.588), passing Ron Couche's record from the 1978-79 season. In the program's career record lists, Murphy ranks second in home runs (27), fourth in doubles (47), fifth in total bases (318), and fifth in runs batted in (120). His 182 hits are 11th most, and all these records stand despite just playing three years at UB. For the program's single-season records, he ranks in the top three for doubles and total bases to go with his home run and RBI records.
With the Murphy call up, UB now has two former players currently on MLB rosters as Steve Geltz has been on the Tampa Bay Rays roster all season long, compiling a 3.88 ERA over 62.2 innings of action while coming out of the Rays bullpen.
