Chris Kwitzer led the Bulls at the plate on Sunday as he went 4-for-9 with a triple, a run scored and a stolen base in the losses while Nick Sinay continued to get on base going 3-for-8 with a pair of walks and four stolen bases.
GAME ONE – BUFFALO 3, Ohio 5
Anthony Magovney had a solid start for the Bulls in game one as he went six innings and allowed just one earned run while scattering six hits and striking out three batters. Unfortunately for Magovney, The Ohio bats woke up late in the game to credit him with a no decision.
The Bulls got on the board in the opening inning as Sinay got hit by a pitch and then was moved over to second on a Ben Haefner ground out. Sinay then stole third base for his 17th of the season and then came around to score on a Bobby Sheppard ground ball to first base, Sheppard's team-leading 15th RBI of the season.
The Bobcats got on the board in the third inning with the tying run after a UB error gave the visitors a new life, which they took advantage of. With a runner on first and two down, Jake Madsen tripled to left center field to score the unearned run off Magovney.
The Bulls responded in the sixth inning with a pair of runs on Eddie Edwards' first career home run to center field. Kwitzer started the two-out rally with a triple down the right field line and Edwards connected on a deep shot to center that the center fielder was not able to track down. Edwards was able to race around the bases and collect his first career inside-the-park homer, giving UB the 3-1 lead.
After a hit and a walk to open the seventh, Magovney was pulled in favor of Mike Kaelin. The electric righty came in and forced two ground outs that allowed the Bobcats to score one run and bring the score to 3-2 in favor of the Bulls.
After a quick 1-2-3 eighth inning, Kaelin took to the mound in the ninth looking for his sixth save of the season, a three inning save. The Bobcats started the inning with a single and a double to put two runners in scoring position before scoring two runs on a Manny DeJesus double. The Bobcats then added another run on a single, giving them the 5-3 lead.
The Bulls were not able to tie the game in the bottom half of the ninth as they dropped the 5-3 decision.
GAME TWO – BUFFALO 3, Ohio 5
The Bulls received another strong pitching performance from their starting pitcher in game two as Mike McGee went 5.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs while giving up four hits and striking out six Bobcats.
The Bulls collected 10 hits in the game including a 3-for-5 effort from their leadoff hitter, Sinay, but they stranded 13 runners on base. The difference in the game for the Bulls was their offenses inability to produce with runners in scoring position.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the fourth inning as Madsen earned a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter connected on a single to score Madsen from second base to give Ohio the early 1-0 lead.
After a pair of Bobcat runs made the score 3-0 in the sixth, UB responded with their first run of the game as Charlie Sobieraski and Kwitzer recorded back-to-back singles and they each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Vinny Mallaro then stepped in and recorded an RBI with a ground ball to shortstop.
After Ohio increased the lead to 4-1, the UB offense produced another run to make the score 4-2. SInay reached first on a fielder's choice and then stole second base before Haefner was hit by a pitch to give the Bulls two on. Sheppard then stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle to score Sinay, his second RBI of the day.
Ohio tacked on their fifth run of the game in the top of the eighth before the Bulls made the score 5-3 in the bottom half. Mallaro started the inning with a single to center and then Mike Abrunzo walked and Sinay earned a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Haefner stepped in and hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Mallaro.
The Bulls were not able to score two in the ninth to force extra innings as the Bobcats collected their second 5-3 win of the afternoon.
Ben Hartz had his second straight impressive outing in the loss for the Bulls as he entered in the eighth inning and allowed just one hit. Hartz now has 31 strikeouts on the season in just 29.2 innings pitched.
UB will return to the diamond on Friday, April 10 as they will head to Miami (OH) for a 6:00 pm game. The two teams will play on Saturday at 3:00 pm and then again on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
