KALAMAZOO, MI – The offense continued to struggle on Sunday afternoon in the series finale with the Western Michigan Broncos as the University at Buffalo baseball team (11-25. 5-13 MAC) lost their sixth straight game, falling 8-0. The Bulls trailed 1-0 heading into the eighth inning but the Broncos were able to add seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the Bulls away.
Senior left-handed pitcher Mike McGee had a great outing that saw him only allow one run through 4.2 innings of work while striking out seven batters. The lone run that McGee allowed happened in the fourth inning as the Broncos led off with a triple and then got a sacrifice fly to score the runner from third.
The Bulls had their first threat of the game in the third inning as Nick Sinay legged out a bunt single and then Ben Haefner singled to left field to move Sinay to second. Unfortunately for the Bulls, Haefner was picked off before Bobby Sheppard could attempt to give UB the lead, ending the inning.
After the Bulls missed opportunity, Western Michigan was able to score the first run of the game in the fourth inning as Kurt Hoekstra tripled to start the inning. Grant Miller then stepped in and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Broncos the 1-0 lead, a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game.
After a couple of quick innings by the Bulls, they pieced together two hits in the seventh inning, trailing only 1-0. Sheppard started the inning with a single up the middle before Vinny Mallaro notched his second hit of the game, a single to left field, moving Sheppard to third. Mitchell Machi then stepped in and had a chance to tie the game but he grounded out to the pitcher, ending the threat.
The Broncos offense would erupt for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game away as they finally got to relief pitcher Mike Kaelin, notching five hits and four runs off the Bulls closer. Ben Hartz then entered and allowed one earned run as the Broncos made the score 8-0.
Mallaro finished off his fifth multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-3 with a double in the losing effort. Sinay continued to get on base as he went 1-for-3 with a walk, reaching base for the 23rd straight game. Haefner finished 1-for-4 at the plate as he extended his hitting streak to five straight contests.
The Bulls will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they head to Niagara for a doubleheader at Bobo Field. The first game will start at approximately 2:00 pm with game two starting a half hour after the end of the first game.
