
Bats Go Cold As UB Loses To Central Michigan On Saturday, 7-2

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball team (11-20, 5-9 MAC) fell behind 7-0 against the Central Michigan Chippewas on Saturday afternoon and they were not able to make the comeback, falling 7-2.
After collecting a season-high 18 hits in Friday's victory over the Chippewas, the Bulls were only able to collect six hits on Saturday including three hits in the final inning. Chris Kwitzer and Justin Gonzalez were able to notch two hits apiece while Ben Vey smashed his team-leading 12th double of the season in the ninth.
Central Michigan was able to collect two runs in three of the first four innings as they were up 6-0 after the fourth inning. The Chippewas starting pitcher Sean Renzi shut down the Bulls lineup for the first five innings before losing his no-hit bid in the sixth after a Kwitzer single up the middle.
After Central Michigan added a run in the top of the eighth, making the score 7-0, Kwitzer and Gonzalez opened the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles but the Bulls couldn't convert with any runs.
UB finally got on the board in the bottom of the ninth inning as Vey pounded a double to deep left field and he came around to score as Vinny Mallaro hit a double down the right field line, giving him 18 RBI's on the year. After an out, Gonzalez stepped in and blooped a single to center field to score Mallaro and make the score 7-2. UB was not able to collect another run as they fell by the same score.
Although he went hitless at the plate, Nick Sinay reached base after getting hit by a pitch and he stole second base, giving him nine straight games with at least one steal. Sinay has now reached base safely in 18 straight games and he continues to lead the nation with 32 stolen bases in 31 games. With his double in the ninth, Vey extended his reaching base streak to 14 straight games while also improving his hit streak to six games.
Anthony Magovney was charged with the loss on Saturday as he pitched six innings while allowing 11 hits and four earned runs. Freshman Logan Harasta entered in the seventh and finished off the game for the Bulls giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out two Chippewas.
The two squads will return to Amherst Audobon Field on Sunday at 1:00 pm for the rubber match game as senior Mike McGee will take the mound for the Bulls.
