OXFORD, OH – Senior left-handed pitcher Mike McGee and redshirt sophomore Mike Kaelin combined to throw the Bulls first shutout of the season on Sunday afternoon as the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York baseball team (9-18, 4-8 MAC) defeated Miami (OH), 6-0. With the win, the Bulls collected their first series win of the season, taking two of three from the RedHawks on the road.
"That was most complete game we played all year," said head coach Ron Torgalski. "We got tremendous pitching performances from Mike McGee and Mike Kaelin that helped us close out the series with a win. We had a couple key two out hits and Bobby Shepperd swung it very well for us today."
The lefty starter was sharp on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match for the Bulls as he cruised through the first two innings before allowing his first hit of the game in the third. McGee only allowed two more hits over the next three innings as he finished off his third win of the season going six innings while allowing no runs and striking out two RedHawks.
Redshirt sophomore Mike Kaelin entered the game in the seventh and wouldn't allow a hit and he closed out another three inning save. Ben Vey opened up the scoring for the Bulls in the second inning as he started the inning out with his team-leading 10th double of the season and came around to score on Chris Kwitzer's RBI single two batters later.
The Bulls added to their 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as they were able to record two more, making the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Kwitzer opened the inning with a single and then stole second base before coming around for a run on Nick Sinay's RBI single to right field. Ben Haefner walked and moved Sinay over to second before Bobby Sheppard singled home Sinay for his first RBI of the afternoon.
As the 7th inning came and the lead still 3-0 for the Bulls, Sinay took over on the base paths to create a run for UB.
