BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team was defeated on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium by the Bucknell Bison by the score of 2-0. The loss moves UB to 1-3-0, while Bucknell improves to 3-2-0.
"Bucknell is a very good team and they were fully deserving of their victory today," said head coach Stu Riddle. "I felt in the first half we had the better of the play but we need to focus and put in a 90 minute performance if we are going to start picking up positive results."
The first half was very evenly played as both sides had their chances to score and take control of the game but neither side was able to do so. Early on, Steven Stryker had the Bulls best opportunity to break through with a goal as he took a hard high shot that was punched over the cross bar by Mike Lansing.
At half, the Bison held the slim 5-4 advantage in shots as the two teams headed to the locker rooms scoreless.
In the 58th minute, Sean Young just missed giving the Bulls the 1-0 lead as his header sailed just over the cross bar after a perfect crossing pass from Russell Cicerone. Just over a minute later the Bison responded with their first goal of the game off the foot of Jesse Klug. Klug took a feed from Chris Thorsheim and buried his right-footed shot in the upper left corner of the net, beating a diving Waleed Cassis.
About 18 minutes later the Bison put the game away as Pat Ploude came off the bench and scored his first goal of the season. Plourde took the feed from Mark Leibensperger and beat Cassis low in the right corner of the net.
For the game, Bucknell held the 18-12 advantage in shots and the 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cassis made a season-high six saves in the losing effort while Young and Cicerone led the team with two shots each. Klug led all players with 10 shots for the Bison.
UB will return to the pitch on Friday night as they travel to take on Big Four foe Niagara at 7:00 pm. The Bulls will stay on the road Sunday for another Big Four match against Canisius at 7:00 pm.
