BUFFALO, NY – Buffalo Soccer Sophomore Russell Cicerone continued to shine on the pitch this summer for the local club FC Buffalo, leading the team in scoring and earning All-NPSL team honors in his first campaign with the club, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
"It's another well deserved accolade for Russell," said second year Buffalo head coach Stu Riddle. "There's no doubting he is a wonderful talent and I am excited to see that talent realized even more this fall with the excellent supporting cast we have coming in to join him."
Following a freshman season that saw him named Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the Year, Cicerone carried that momentum to FC Buffalo this summer as he set a club record in scoring after posting single-season club highs in goals (eight) and assists (six) in just 13 contests. He also won the league's first Mitre National Player of the Week award earlier this season. He is FC Buffalo's first postseason award winner since Corey Phillips in 2011.
For the Bulls, Cicerone turned in one of the best seasons ever by a UB freshman, being named Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Conference. He became the first Bull to earn first team accolades since Mike Unwin in 2009.
He scored six goals and assisted on two others, with three of those goals directly leading to the team's three wins for the season. His six goals were the most by a Buffalo player since Unwin's nine during the 2009 campaign.
The Bulls will kickoff their 2014 preseason with three exhibition matches, starting on Aug. 17 as they will travel to take on Genesee Community College at 12:30 pm. UB's first regular season match is set for Aug. 29 at San Diego at 7:00 pm.
