BUFFALO, NY - Senior pitcher Kevin Hughes was named the Mid-American Conference's East Division Pitcher of the Week Tuesday in the final weekly award of the regular season. It's the team's fourth weekly conference honor of the 2014 season and it is Hughes' second pitcher of the week recognition.
Hughes was gunning for his third complete game of the season Friday before Mother Nature would step in. The sixth-year senior threw just 94 pitches and struck out eight batters as he cruised through the first seven innings of UB's series opener against Bowling Green. He allowed just one unearned run, coming off a multi-base error, and allowed only four hits and a single walk. The game would be suspended before he could retake the mound in the eighth, and he would be unavailable to head back out after the restart would be delayed 46 hours. He would pick up the win, his fourth of the season, and lowered his season ERA to 2.70.
The senior righty will take the mound this week for the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Bulls, coming in as the sixth seed, will host third-seeded Miami at 9:30 am Wednesday morning.
