BUFFALO, NY - Senior pitcher Kevin Hughes was named the Mid-American Conference's East Division Pitcher of the Week Monday morning. It's the team's third weekly conference honor of the 2014 season and it is Hughes' first pitcher of the week recognition.
Hughes spun a two-hit, complete-game shutout to lead the Bulls to a 6-0 win over rival Kent State Friday evening. The righty was sharp from the start, retiring the first eight batters of the game before allowing a one-out double in the third. He then shifted his focus to game-management, closing out innings with runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth to allow his offense to build a lead for him. While he would only strike out three batters in the game, he would get support from his defense and faced just seven batters over the minimum. It was only his second win of the season, he lowers his ERA to 2.93 over 43.0 innings pitched.
The team will have a five-game homestand on the schedule with the hopes of finally seeing time at Amherst Audubon Field. First up is a mid-week doubleheader at home against Canisius on Tuesday before hosting a red-hot Akron squad for three games next weekend. Tuesday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 pm start, weather permitting.
