OLEAN, NY - The Buffalo men's soccer team opened a new era Friday evening, starting the 2013 season with a 3-1 loss at St. Bonaventure (1-0). The Bonnies scored a pair of goals in the opening half, and built a 3-0 lead before Russell Cicerone's first career goal gave UB (0-1) its lone score.
Cicerone was one of five true freshmen and seven newcomers to make the start for the Bulls, who is in its first season under new head coach Stu Riddle. Hooking up with classmate Nicolai Berry, Cicerone knocked home his goal in the 61st minute of the game. The Bonnies staked a commanding early lead thanks to a pair of goals within two minutes of each other, on a goal in the 27th minute and a goal off a rebound in the 29th minute.
Despite owning a slight 7-6 advantage in corner kicks, the Bulls were doubled up in shots, allowing 12 to the Bonnies while only attempting six. Braden Culver and Kristian Lee-Him each had two shots, with Culver putting both on frame.
The team will open up its home season on Sunday, hosting the Vermont Catamounts as part of a doubleheader with the women's soccer game. First kick is scheduled for 3 pm.
