ROCHESTER, NY - The Bulls won its third straight Mid-American Conference series Saturday, splitting a doubleheader against the Toledo Rockets (11-18, 4-5 MAC) at Monroe Community College. Anthony Magovney went for a complete-game 3-1 win in game one, and Toledo won game two 6-0 over Buffalo (16-13, 6-3 MAC).
Magovney was flat-out dominant in his start, hurling an efficient nine innings on just 90 pitches. He faced just three batters over the minimum, struck out six batters and did not allow a walk. He scattered five hits and had five innings where he faced just three hitters.
The UB offense was held in check for much of the game as well, as the game was dominated from the mound on both sides. Toledo starter Cameron Palmer went the distance as well, and had allowed just a single run going to the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Jimmy Topps led off with a bloop over the first baseman's head that he was able to hustle to second on for the double. After Jason Kanzler was walked intentionally, Alex Baldock came in as a pinch hitter and bunted them both over. Toledo countered by walking Mautner intentionally to load the bases. After a strikeout put the offense's back to the wall, Jon Mestas came through in the clutch and hit a 2-2 pitch past a diving third baseman and shortstop to score Topps and Kanzler, who hustled home from second and beat the throw.
Those runs would come in handy, as Toledo's first two batters reached in the top of the ninth and put a runner on third. Magovney induced a 4-6-3 double play as the defense ignored the runner at third, trading the run for two crucial outs. The game ended on a check-swing strikeout.
In game two, Toledo's offense finally perked up. After being held to a .188 team average in the first two games of the series, the Rockets – who came into the weekend batting .290 as a team – cranked out 15 total hits. That was three more than it had accumulated in the previous two games.
Mike Burke took the loss after allowing three runs in 6.2 innings of work. River McWilliams allowed two runs in 1.1 innings of work, and Tyler Wilson allowed a run in his lone inning of relief. The UB offense managed just four hits in the game.
The team will have a quiet week ahead, with no mid-week games leading into a road conference series against Eastern Michigan starting on Friday at noon.
