BUFFALO, NY – For the first time in program history, the University at Buffalo baseball team earned a three-game sweep of defending Mid-American Conference champion Kent State over the weekend. The Bulls took both games of the doubleheader on Sunday to complete the sweep. Buffalo won the first game, 4-3, and took game two, 3-2. The Bulls are now 11-4 in conference play and sit atop the standings in the East Division.
In game one, Buffalo overcame six errors to win a 4-3 decision. The Bulls opened the scoring in the first inning when Jason Kanzler scored on a Kent State fielding error to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Kent State scored once in the second inning and another in the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage. Kanzler put the Bulls back on top with a two-run single in the fifth inning to put UB ahead, 3-2.
Kent State tied the game at three on a UB error in the sixth inning. UB reliever River McWiliams entered the game for starter Anthony Magovney with two men on and no outs in the top of the eighth inning. The senior closer pitched the Bulls out of trouble, not allowing a Golden Flashes' run.
UB took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mike Burke hit a sacrifice fly to score Jon Mestas. McWilliams pitched around a one-out single in the ninth for the win.
Magovney pitched well for UB, considering the fielding errors behind him. The sophomore pitcher allowed only one earned run over seven innings and struck out five.
Kanzler, Mestas and Jimmy Topps each had two hits in the opener.
Head Coach Ron Torgalski handed the ball to his top starter Burke in the nightcap and the junior hurler didn't disappoint. Burke pitched eight innings of shutout ball.
RBI singles by Thomas Richards and Michael Scarcillo in the fifth inning gave the Bulls a 2-0 lead. An RBI double by Alex Baldock plated Ryan Tulloch in the sixth inning to up the advantage to 3-0.
Kent State got two one-out singles in the ninth before Burke got a much-needed strike out. However, Kent State's next batter also singled and all of the sudden the Golden Flashes had the bases loaded and the winning run at the plate.
McWilliams relieved Burke looking for the one-out save. Zarley Zalewski made it interesting when he ripped a two-run single to right field. However, McWilliams got Derek Toadvine to strike out looking to end the game and earn his eighth save of the season.
"The good thing is we found a way to win," Torgalski said. "We battled through the adversity. Kent State kept coming back and we got it done."
It marked the first time since the 2008 season that Kent State was swept in a conference series.
Buffalo will next play Niagara on Tuesday afternoon at Amherst Audubon Field.
