BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo sophomore punter Tyler Grassman was named the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, the league announced. It marks the third straight week a UB student-athlete has earned the award.
Grassman, a management major with a 3.83 grade point average, averaged 41.7 yards on nine punts against Bowling Green. He had four punts downed inside the 20-yard line, with one downed at the 1-yard line and one downed at the 7-yard line. The Bulls gave up zero punt return yards on his nine punts.
In his second year as the Bulls' starting punter, Grassman is averaging 40.1 yards per punt. He has seven kicks of 50 yards or more and 25 of his 68 punts on the season have been downed inside the 20-yard line. Grassman also handles kickoff duties.
Grassman joins Mackenzie Loesing of the women's basketball team and Brittney Kuras of the women's swimming and diving team as UB's MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week winners this year.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher, and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by the conference's faculty athletics representatives.
