Former Bull Steve Geltz Gets Call To The Majors

BUFFALO, NY - Former University at Buffalo baseball player and Ransomville, NY native Steve Geltz has been called up to the Anaheim Angels, the organization announced early Saturday morning. Geltz, who has pitched in both the AA and AAA levels this season, becomes the first Buffalo player to reach the Major Leagues since Joe Hesketh.
Geltz, 24, is getting his first big league call up after posting a 2.09 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP and a 4.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 51 2/3 innings for Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake this year.
Geltz -- listed at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds -- has been with the organization since 2008, compiling a 3.51 ERA in 165 appearances in the Angels' farm system. He posted a 0.36 ERA in 21 games in the Texas League, then a 3.76 ERA in 19 appearances in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
Hesketh, also a pitcher, played in the Major Leagues through the 1994 season.
The call up for Geltz is just one of the story lines for Bulls in the Minor Leagues right now. Tom Murphy, who was drafted in the third round by the Colorado Rockies this past June, is currently on a 20-game hitting streak for the Tri-City Dust Devils, the longest by a player in the Northwest League this season. Murphy is eyeing the club record of 23 as well as the league record of 26.
