BUFFALO, NY - Last week, the Bulls remained in the hunt for the final spot in the Mid-American Conference tournament race with a series win over Toledo, winning Friday and Sunday. Still trailing heading into the final two weekends, the Bulls will need to bring its 'A' game as it welcomes in Eastern Michigan for three games.
Jason Kanzler led the team to a 6-2 win on Sunday at Toledo, driving in five runs and stroking a double and home run. The five RBI matched a career high for Kanzler, who also drove in five runs last season against Delaware State. His big day clinched the weekend series for UB, its third series win in the past four MAC series.
The starting pitching was the key for UB in its series win over the MAC's West division leader. Cameron Copping, Jeff Thompson and Mike Burke combined to allow three earned runs over 21.2 innings, allowing just two extra-base hits over that span to douse the Rocket's offense.
The Eagles took two of three games against Bowling Green in its final home games of the year. A deep bench has been key to the team, with 12 different position players starting in a least 14 games and five different pitchers making five or more starts.
On both offense and on the mound, the Eagles have been disciplined. While the starting nine have drawn 244 walks (5.3 per game) to just 271 strikeouts (5.9 per game). Meanwhile, the pitching staff has walked just 166 batters (3.6 per game) and have struck out 317 (6.9 per game). Senior infielder Ben Magsig leads the team with a .514 slugging percentage and an eye-popping .512 on-base percentage thanks in part to a 2.05 walk/strikeout ratio.
The two teams have played 12 times coming into this weekend, with Eastern Michigan holding a dominant 11-1 advantage. The Eagles swept UB last season in Ypsilanti. Buffalo's lone win in the series came in 2007, a 2-1 win at home.
