
Swimmers Impressive Against Cornell

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams took on Ivy League opponent Cornell on Saturday afternoon in a non-scoring meet at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls took 19 of the 32 events on the day with the men claiming 10 victories and the women winning nine.
The UB women had a pair of double winners on Saturday. Jessica Powers won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.35 and later took the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.72. Dani Adank swept the butterfly races, winning the 200-yard distance in 2:08.08 and following with a 58.43 clocking in the 100-yard race. Powers also teamed with Spencer Rodriguez, Mallory Morrell and Brittney Kuras to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:33.37.
Other individual winners for the UB women included Morrell in the 50-yard freestyle (23.67), Paula Stoddard in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:32.63) and Ava Giachino in the one-meter diving (257.40 points). Claudia Doyle, Kuras, Steffl and Morrell combined to take the 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.98.
In the men's competition, Mike Dugan took the sprint freestyle races as he won the 50-yard race in 20.74 and the 100-yard event in 45.83. He also anchored both of UB's winning relay entries. Cory Zorsch, Josh Meints, Matt Schwippert and Dugan teamed for the win in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.53. Antonio Lanzi, Zorsch, Matt Hogan and Dugan took the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:07.44.
Zorsch won the 100-yard butterfly in 49.87 with Lanzi taking the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.18. Freshman Bill Caffee won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:44.54 with junior Eric Culver claiming the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.14. The Bulls also swept the men's diving events with Shawn Hoffman winning on the one-meter board (320.55) and Chris Iafrati taking the three-meter competition (305.25).
"I was very pleased with how the team stepped up and competed today," said head coach Andy Bashor. "They have been putting in great effort over the past couple of weeks and it showed with how well they did. The men have a big meet coming up in a couple of weeks at Army, so we will be getting ready for it. The women will be ready for Akron next weekend. MAC opponents are always fun to compete against."
The UB women open Mid-American Conference action at Alumni Arena Natatorium next Saturday (November 3) against Akron at 1:00 pm. The men travel to Colgate and Army the weekend of November 9-10 for their next meets.
