TOLEDO, OH - After poor weather postponed yesterday's series opener at Toledo, the Bulls played two Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair by the score of 7-0 and 7-3.
In game one, the Bulls ran into a buzzsaw in Toledo starter Mike Hamann, who came into the game with a 1.95 earned run average, and improved upon that with seven innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits while walking one Bull. Buffalo had its best chance in his final inning, with Eric Bryce and Jordan Camp hitting back-to-back singles. Andy Smietana could not convert with runners on second and third later in the inning though, grounding out to strand the team's best scoring opportunity.
Bryce and Matt Pollock led the team with two hit apiece, with Pollock hitting a double as part of his afternoon. Starting pitcher Kevin Crumb gave up seven runs (four earned) in six innings to take the loss but the team received a promising effort from Daniel Ginader out of the bullpen, tossing two innings and allowing only three hits.
With the Bulls gunning hard to earn its first MAC win in game two, Toledo used a huge early innings to gain a lead that proved to be insurmountable in the end. The Rockets (15-15) plated six runs in the second inning on six hits off of starter Josh Edwards. Much to his credit though, Edwards saved the bullpen and ended up pitching all eight innings of the game, allowing only one more run after his rough start.
The Buffalo offense did its best to support its senior starter, breaking into the scorebook with three runs in the top of the fourth. After a two-out single from Bryce put him at first and River McWilliams at second. Camp came through with a double that scored McWilliams, and Michael Burke stepped up right after with a two-run double to center field that pushed across Bryce and Camp. For the game, the Bulls had seven batters with one hit, but no more runs would be scored by either team until the eighth inning when Toledo added an insurance run.
With the loss, the team is now 7-20 and 0-8 in the Mid American Conference. Tomorrow's game will cap the weekend, with the first pitch slated for 1:05 pm. Live stats will be available through the Rockets' schedule page.
