Buffalo Loses Second Straight to Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, MI - Another slow day on offense lead Buffalo to its second straight loss to Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon, a 5-1 defeat. The two teams combined for only ten hits, but the Eagles were able to capitalize on its opportunities.

Starting pitcher Josh Edwards battled through five errors on the day by the Bulls defense, striking out five while yielding three earned runs but five total on the day. Kevin Hughes was a bright spot out of the bullpen, tossing 1.2 hitless innings with two more strikeouts in relief.

After getting only two hits in the first five innings, the offense was finally able to plate a run in the top of the sixth. Alex Baldock was hit by a pitch and Tom Murphy singled past the shortstop to move Baldock to second. After a groundout moved both in to scoring position, Eric Bryce came up with a chance to drive the run in. He hit a ground ball to the pitcher and Baldock broke from third on the hit. He was gunned down at home plate but Murphy moved in to third behind him.

Now with two outs, Eastern Michigan pulled its starter and Michael Burke touched up the new reliever with a single to right field that was able to score Murphy and cut the Eagles lead to 3-1 heading in to the bottom of the sixth. The game was put away in the bottom of the seventh, though, due to mental mistakes by the infield that led to two more runs by the home team despite not getting a single hit.

The Bulls had a ninth-inning rally in the works after a one-out walk by Jason Kanzler and a single to right by Matt Pollock that moved Kanzler to third base. A strikeout and a fly out nipped the rally in the bud and led the team to a 5-1 loss.

The loss moves Buffalo to 7-13 (0-2 MAC) with a crucial Sunday afternoon game with EMU (14-8, 2-0 MAC) set for tomorrow. First pitch at Oestrike Stadium is set for 1 pm, with live stats again available through BuffaloBulls.com.
