
Swim Teams Sweep Away Colgate

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams rolled to victories on Saturday against visiting Colgate at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The men defeated the Raiders, 159-106, while the women scored a 165.5-134.5 victory.
The UB women won 11 of the 16 events on Saturday. The UB men scored victories in 10 events before exhibitioning the remainder of the card.
Scoring double victories for the UB women were senior Alie Schirmers and sophomores Marissa Murphy and Ava Giachino.
Schirmers took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.02 and also won the 400-yard individual medley in a season-best 4:29.12. She also posted a season-best mark in the 200-yard freestyle as she finished third in 1:56.86. Murphy won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.03 and the 100-yard butterfly in 56.62. Giachino swept the women's diving competitions with a six-dive total of 258.68 on the one-meter board and a season-best 280.28 on the three-meter board.
Also winning individual events for the UB women were Brittney Kuras in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.12), Brynn Marecki in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.74) and Mallory Morrell in the 100-yard freestyle (53.14).
Both of the women's relay teams were also victorious with the 200-yard medley relay foursome of Karly Moore, Marecki, Murphy and Taylor Snyder winning in 1:47.90 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Morrell, Murphy, Snyder and Kuras winning in 1:35.42.
For the UB men, Matt Hogan and Matt Schwippert were double winners. Hogan won the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.92 and set a season-best time in winning the 100-yard freestyle in 46.03. Schwippert claimed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.67 and the 200-yard backstroke in a season-best 1:50.34.
Other men's winners included Colin McAllister in the 1,000-yard freestyle (season-best 9:54.28), Mike Dugan in the 100-yard backstroke (52.01) and Jared Heine in the 50-yard freestyle (21.12). UB's B foursome of Travis Bohn, Christian Muller, Heine and Hogan won the meet's opening event, the 200-yard medley relay in 1:34.69. Colin Patrican and Chris Iafrati set season-best marks to win the diving competitions. Patrican took the one-meter event with 282.75 points while Iafrati won the three-meter event at 307.13.
"We've been pushing them really hard and for them to step up and race a good Colgate team is great," said UB head coach Andy Bashor. "We now have to get ready for the Akron Invite."
The Bulls will participate in the Akron Invite from December 2-4. UB's divers travel next weekend to Arizona's Wildcat Diving Invite.
