
Women's Swimmers Nipped By Toledo, 153-147

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team opened Mid-American Conference action on Saturday afternoon with a 153-147 loss to visiting Toledo at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the MAC.
The Bulls won seven of the 16 events on the program on Saturday as the meet stayed close throughout with both teams holding the lead at one time or another.
Sophomore Brittney Kuras won a pair of freestyle races, lowering her season-best mark in both events. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.97, shaving two seconds off her previous top mark. Kuras also took the 100-yard freestyle in 50.84, cutting two-tenths of a second from the mark she set last week against Pittsburgh.
Also scoring a pair of wins for the Bulls was sophomore diver Ava Giachino. Giachino improved on her season-best marks victories on the one-meter springboard with 269.10 points and the three-meter competition with 259.80 points for her six-dive routines.
Junior Mallory Morrell won the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 23.46, knocking .14 seconds from her previous best as the Bulls scored the top three spots in the race with Taylor Steffl (23.84) and Marissa Murphy (24.05), also posting season bests.
Morrell also anchored both of UB's victorious relay squads. The 200-yard medley relay team finished in a season-best 1:45.48 as Morrell came from behind to touch ahead of Toledo's Beth Rogers by six-hundredths of a second. Joining Morrell in the relay were Claudia Doyle, Alie Schirmers and Steffl). The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Steffl, Karly Moore, Kuras and Morrell won their race in 3:29.73.
"I'm very proud of their efforts with the energy they brought today to race some tough competition," stated head coach Andy Bashor at the conclusion of the meet.
The Bulls travel to Athens, OH to face Ohio University next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
