KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season as Western Michigan scored the deciding goal with 38 seconds left in regulation for a 2-1 decision over the Bulls. UB falls to 7-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Mid-American Conference play with the loss.
Western Michigan's Jarrett Kersten scored on a header following a free kick deep in the UB zone in the final minute of play ending a frenetic second half that saw all three goals scored.
Three minutes into the second half, Lukas Fedler scored on a header following a free kick that Matthew Chereson sailed from 40-yards out to give the Bulls the lead. The goal was Fedler's third of the season and Chereson's second assist of the year. Chereson also assisted on Fedler's game-winning goal at Northern Illinois on October 1.
Western Michigan (5-8-1, 1-1-1 MAC) tied the contest in the 74th minute. Kai Mendes' free kick sailed to the right side of the defensive wall formed by the Bulls and fell past UB goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi knotting the contest at 1-1. It was the first goal allowed by the Bulls in 199 minutes, which included last week's shutout victory over Bowling Green. Immediately after the goal, the Bulls' bench was issued a yellow card. It was the third consecutive match that the UB bench was assessed a card.
Western Michigan held the statistical edge in nearly every category on the scoresheet. The Broncos outshot the Bulls 24-6 overall and had a 12-2 advantage on shots on goal. WMU also had seven corner kicks to UB's two in the contest. The Bulls were whistled for nearly twice as many fouls as the Broncos, 22-13. Eight yellow cards were handed out, all in the second half, with UB receiving four.
Viscosi tied his career high with eight saves in the match. The Bulls' team was also credited with two saves for a total of 10 saves in the match. Viscosi also had eight saves in his first two games of the season against St. Bonaventure and Robert Morris.
The Bulls host nationally-ranked and MAC leader Akron on Friday, October 21 at UB Stadium at 7:30 pm in their next action.
