COLUMBUS, OH – A pair of penalty kicks turned out to be the difference as the University at Buffalo men's soccer team fought 18th-ranked Ohio State tough but fell to the Buckeyes, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon as the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic came to a conclusion at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Bulls (0-2) held their own against their second consecutive Big Ten opponent to start the season holding the Buckeyes off the scoreboard until late in the second half. Konrad Warzycha scored both OSU goals on penalty kicks in the 74th and 86th minutes.
UB was outshot by Ohio State 15-7 with three of the Bulls' shots on goal. Mike Unwin, an All-MAC Second Team selection in 2009, led the Bulls with four shots on the day, including two on goal. Trailing 2-0 in the final five mintues, the Bulls were stopped twice on point-blank shots, one by Rich Wilson in the 87th minute and one by Unwin in the 90th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Fetterman played all 90 minutes in net for the Bulls making two saves.
UB placed two on the All-Tournament team as defender Kieron Gradwell and midfielder Jordan Brouk were cited for their stellar play in the pair of weekend matches.
The Bulls return to Western New York to face local rival Canisius on Friday at 4:00 pm. UB opens the home schedule on Sunday, September 12 against Robert Morris.
