ONEONTA, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team opened Mid-American Conference play on Tuesday evening with a 1-0 win over Hartwick at Elmore Field. The Bulls evened their record at 4-4 overall and are 1-0 in the MAC while the Hawks are 1-7-1 and 0-1 in the MAC.
The only goal of the match came as a result of a freak play in the first half. The Bulls were credited with an own goal as the ball was inadvertently headed into the Hartwick net by a Hawk player giving UB a 1-0 edge at the 28:43 mark.
That was all the offense that the Bulls needed as the defense took over holding Hartwick off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match. UB goalkeeper Nick Fetterman made five saves to register his first win of the season and his first shutout of the season. The junior from North Tonawanda, NY recorded his fifth career shutout in the match.
UB outshot the Hawks 15-10 and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks. Jordan Brouk had three of UB's shots while Nate Woods, Andy Tiedt, Mike Unwin and Maksym Kowal each had two shots.
The Bulls will next renew their rivalry at Niagara on Friday night starting at 7:00 pm.
