Bulls Snap Skid with Victory over Miami, 16-10

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team ended its four-game winless streak as they defeated Miami (OH), 16-10, in its conference series opener at Amherst Audubon Field on Friday afternoon. The victory gives the Bulls 21 overall wins this season, breaking the school record for most wins in a season since the program's reinstatement in 2000.
The Bulls were led by senior center fielder Adam Skonieczki, who went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored including a season-high six RBIs. Senior shortstop Jacob Rosenbeck went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs.
Facing an 11-4 deficit at the start of the seventh inning, the RedHawks scored a total of five runs in the seventh to bring their deficit within two runs, 11-9. In the RedHawks' continuous battle from a seven-run deficit in the seventh, Miami catcher Adam Weisenburger hit a three-run shot over the right field wall.
The Bulls erupted for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 16-9 edge over the RedHawks. Off an RBI double, Skonieczki recorded his sixth RBI of the day to give the Bulls' a 12-9 lead over the RedHawks. Adding to the Bulls' lead, senior second baseman Brad Agustin scored a pair of runs off a two RBI double.
With the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, the RedHawks hit into a double play at first and second with only one run crossing the plate. Closer Kevin Crumb ended the RedHawks' chances of a rally as Crumb struck out Miami center fielder Adam Eaton on the final out of the contest.
Senior designated hitter Brad Cochrane opened the contest's scoring in top of the first as he found a gap in right center, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead off an RBI double. With runners on first and second, Skonieczki belted his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to dead center for a Bulls' 4-0 lead.
With the RedHawks looking to rebound off the Bulls' four runs in the bottom of the first, UB senior pitcher Chaz Mye retired the side, striking out the three batters faced to end the top of the second.
Senior first baseman Rob Lawler kept the Bulls' offensive machine running in the bottom of the second with an RBI double off the right-center wall, driving in freshman catcher Tom Murphy, who started the Bulls off with a leadoff double. Later in the inning, Rosenbeck hit a high ball that managed to drop into left field as an RBI base hit, driving in Cochrane for Buffalo's 7-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rosenbeck crushed a two-run shot over the right field wall to extend the Bulls' lead to 9-0. Rosenbeck's blast was the sixth of the season and his 13th career home run moving into a tie for fifth place on the school all-time list.
The RedHawks broke their scoreless streak in the top of the sixth with four runs to cut into the Bulls' lead, 9-4.
Off a pair of RBI base hits by Skonieczki and senior right fielderCharlie Karstedt, Buffalo extended its lead to 11-4.
Mye (4-6) recorded the Bulls' win in 5.2 innings of work. His chance of a no-hitter came to an end in the top of the fifth as he allowed a base hit, which he compiled nine strikeouts during the no-hit streak.
The Bulls (21-26, 7-15 MAC) will continue their final conference home series versus the RedHawks on Saturday, May 15 with the first pitch at 1:00 pm.
