Bulls Split Doubleheader with Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The University at Buffalo baseball team split
the first of two doubleheaders in the four-game weekend series with
Butler on Friday afternoon at Bulldog Park. Meeting for the first
time in program history, the Bulls captured a 9-1 victory in the
opener, led by shortstop Brad Agustin at the plate and pitcher Chaz Mye. In the nightcap, the Bulls fell to the Bulldogs, 9-2.
The Bulls secured an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning
of the opening contest. With runners at first and second, senior
Rob Lawler drove in the first run of the contest by poking an RBI
single through the left side. Later in the inning, senior Jacob Rosenbeck would follow Lawler's lead by poking a two-RBI
single through the left side to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead.
Buffalo's next three runs came off the bat of Agustin. In the
top of the second, Agustin drilled a solo shot to deep left-center
followed by a two-RBI double down the left field line to give the
Bulls a 6-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
In the final three innings of the seven-inning opening contest of
the doubleheader, the Bulls scored one run in each inning to record
a 9-1 victory. The Bulldogs' lone run of the contest came in
the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single.
In the victory, Mye (2-2) evened his record while allowing only one
run off six hits in 6.0 innings of work. In relief work, senior
Brian Pullyblank pitched the final inning, recording a
strikeout.
At the plate, Agustin went 3-for-3 including a walk, a pair of runs
and three RBIs. Rosenbeck went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and two
RBIs.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs leaped out to a 7-0 lead in the
bottom of the second. Butler erupted for six runs in the bottom of
the second including a three-RBI double to left center followed by
a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Of the Bulls' two runs scored in the contest, their first run
came in the top of the fourth off an RBI single into right field by
senior Charlie Karstedt.
Butler added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend
their lead to 9-1.
With the bases loaded, the Bulls' final run of the contest
came off a sacrifice fly to left field by Karstedt, his second RBI
of the day.
Starter Gavin Black (1-1) recorded the Bulls' loss in 1.1
innings of work. In relief work, Jeffrey Hains struck out three
batters while allowing only three hits in the final 6.2
innings.
Serving as designated hitter, Karstedt went 2-for-3 with a pair of
RBIs. Seniors Adam Skonieczki and Bobby Pizzuto each collected two
hits.
Due to inclement weather forecast for Sunday, March 21, the Bulls
will face the Bulldogs in a second doubleheader on Saturday, March
20 at Bulldog Park with the opener at 12:00 pm.
