Caroline Simmons and Meili Carpenter Win MAC Championships

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships with impressive swims, as Caroline Simmons and Meili Carpenter won MAC Championships, while Alie Schirmers, Carpenter and Simmons each broke individual school records. The Bulls finished the meet tied for fifth place with MAC rival Akron.
Simmons broke a school record for the third day in a row, claiming
her first MAC title, as she won the 100 freestyle in a time of
49.69. Simmons' record time breaks one of the longest standing
records, with the previous record of 50.89 being set in
1998. Jessie
Koltz also had a lifetime-best time in the 100 freestyle,
finishing 11th in a time of 50.79. Schirmers broke her second
school record of the weekend, breaking the 200 breaststroke record
in a time of 2:15.91, while picking up fourth-place points. Brynn
Marecki took ninth in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in a
time of 2:18.00. The Bulls wrapped up their record breaking weekend
with a school record in the 400 freestyle relay as the team
of Sam
Palma, Koltz, Deren, Simmons took second place in a time of
3:24.62, breaking the record of 3:25.02 set last season.Distance
specialist Jordan
Deren opened the night with an eighth-place finish and
season-best time of 16:51.77 in the 1,650 freestyle. The 100
backstroke was highlighted by Katelyn
Pratt-Collins finishing in the sixth-place spot with a
time of 2:01.59. Caitlin
Reilly finished 16th in the 100 backstroke, with a time of
2:03.34.
Senior diver Carpenter capped off an impressive final event, becoming the MAC champion in the three-meter diving event to give her a clean sweep of the boards for the weekend. Carpenter scored an unprecedented 350.65 points, breaking her own school record for the fourth time this season. The second-place competitor collected 284.30 points, as Carpenter was the only diver to break the 300-point mark. Carpenter finishes off an impressive season after earning the MAC title in the one-meter event on Thursday.
The Bulls finish the 2010 MAC Championships tied with Akron for fifth place. Toledo won the team title after earning 670.5 points, followed by Miami (572), Ohio (527), Eastern Michigan (453.5), Buffalo (392), Akron (392), Bowling Green (241) and Ball State (166). The men's team kicks off their MAC Championship meet on Thursday at Eastern Michigan.
