Men's Swimmers Win Zippy Invitational

AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team won the University of Akron's Zippy Invitational on Sunday evening. The Bulls totaled 1,626 points to outdistance second-place Xavier. The UB women finished third of 12 teams with 1,000.5 points as Ohio University took the team title.
The Bulls finished the meet with a meet record and season-best time in their victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The top UB foursome of Simon Proudfoot, Mike Dugan, Matt Hogan and Jared Heine touched in 3:03.88 to secure the record and the meet title. The Bulls also placed seventh in the race as the B squad of Phil Aronica, Sterling Gell, Josh Meints and Cory Zorsch turned in a season-best time of 3:09.91.
UB's men also won two other events on Sunday afternoon. Matt Schwippert claimed the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:50.43 with Zorsch taking fourth in 1:54.51 and Aronica eighth in 1:57.58. Eric Culver won the 1,650-yard freestyle race in 16:08.90 and also placed eighth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.28.
The Bulls also found success in the 100-yard freestyle race with three swimmers in the championship final and a victory in the consolation race. Heine took third in the A final in a season-best 46.10 with Dugan finishing fifth in a season-best 46.61. Hogan was sixth in 46.87. Proudfoot won the consolation final in a season-best 46.89 to place ninth overall.
Chris Waldock placed seventh in the men's 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.92 as he and Culver competed in the championship final. Andrew Tanzey won the consolation final in 1:56.72. Meints won the consolation final of the 200-yard breaststroke in a season-best 2:09.63.
In the women's meet, the Bulls had a pair of championship finalists in the 200-yard breaststroke. Alie Schirmers placed second in the A final in 2:21.90 while Brynn Marecki took fifth in 2:24.65.
Caroline Simmons earned a season best with her fourth-place showing in the women's 100-yard freestyle. Simmons turned in time of 51.87. The Bulls also had a pair of eighth-place finishes. Jordan Deren was eighth in the women's 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:36.98 while Danielle Adank took eighth in the women's 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.31.
The women closed the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Jessie Koltz, Marissa Murphy, Karly Moore and Simmons finished in 3:31.41.
The Bulls will now focus on exams and winter training. The next meet for both squads is slated for January 15 as the Bulls host Binghamton at Alumni Arena Natatorium at 2:00 pm.
