Bulls Fall in Tournament Semifinals
The University at Buffalo men's soccer team saw its season come to an end Friday evening as the Bulls were eliminated in the Mid-American Conference Tournament's semifinal round by top-seeded and second-ranked Akron, 3-1, finishing with an overall mark of 7-10-1. Akron went on to defeat Western Michigan in the championship match, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Craven Tallies First and Only Goal
The lone goal for the Bulls was scored in the waning minutes of the match as senior Sam Craven tallied his first marker of the season and his UB career. Craven scored unassisted at the 88:35 mark of the match on a shot from four yards outside of the net. Craven's goal came just 14 seconds after the Zips scored their third goal of the match. After playing three seasons at Lynn University in Florida, the Nottingham, England native transferred to UB for his senior year.
Craven, Derkacz Earn All-Tourney Honors
Two Bulls earned recognition to the MAC's all-tournament squad following the conclusion of the weekend. Seniors Sam Craven, who netted UB's goal, and Casey Derkacz, who played all 90 minutes and set up UB's offense, were selected to the team.
Unwin Named to All-MAC Team
Senior Mike Unwin earned a spot on the All-Mid-American Conference team for the second consecutive season as the league announced its annual awards prior to the opening of the league championship tournament. Unwin was named to the second team after earning first team honors in 2009. Unwin led the Bulls in most offensive categories with a team-best five goals and 13 points. He tied for the team lead with three assists. Heading into the league tournament, he ranked second in the MAC with 3.31 shots per game and third in the league with 53 shots. He also tied for sixth in the league with his five goals and was seventh among all MAC players with 0.31 goals per game.
