BUFFALO, NY – Former University at Buffalo football standout Mike Newton was signed to the Indianapolis Colts 53-man roster this week and is expected to be in uniform this weekend when Indy plays the Kansas City Chiefs.
Newton, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Colts right after the NFL draft last April, has been on the Colts practice squad since the conclusion of training camp. He joins former teammate Jamey Richard on the Colts' active roster. Richard, a three-year pro, has been the Colts starting left guard this year.
Newton had a tremendous career with the Bulls as a three-year starter at free safety. He was a two-time Mid-American Conference all-league selection and finished his career fourth all-time in solo tackles (196) and sixth in total tackles (342). He also ranks in a tie for fourth place with 12 interceptions in UB's career charts and third all-time in passes defended with 32 and was named MVP of the MAC Championship game in UB's 42-24 win over Ball State.
Buffalo has five former Bulls with NFL teams, including Newton and Richard, defensive end Trevor Scott (starting with the Oakland Raiders), wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt (Buffalo Bills practice squad) and running back James Starks (Green Bay Packers). With Starks set to be activated to the Packers active roster in two weeks from the Physically Unable to Perform list, it would mark a school record four former Bulls on active rosters in the NFL.
