PITTSBURGH, PA – The University at Buffalo men's
soccer team concluded its two-game road trip by falling to
Duquesne, 5-0 at Rooney Field.
The Dukes jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Josh Patterson scored
in the third minute off a loose rebound. Tyler Tompkins added
back-to-back goals in the 25th and 33rd minute to give the Dukes a
3-0 lead. The Dukes closed out the first half with a 4-0 lead as
Stefan Lundberg tacked on a tally off a penalty kick in the 42nd
minute.
In the first half, the Dukes held a 9-7 shot advantage. Senior Dan Bulley accounted for two of the Bulls' shots, both
headers.
"We dug ourselves in a hole by playing too relaxed and
confident in the first half," said head coach John Astudillo
in reaction to the team's four-goal deficit at the half.
To start the second half, freshman Ryan Lewis made his Bulls debut
in place of starter Nick Fetterman.
The Bulls opened the second half, rifling off five unanswered
shots. In the 70th minute, the Dukes registered their first shot of
the half to result in a goal by Dave Cassanelli and a Dukes 5-0
lead.
"As a team, we attacked offensively in the second
half," stated Astudillo.
The Bulls owned a 15–12 shot advantage, outshooting the Dukes
8-3 in the second half. Alex Marrello led the Bulls with three
shots.
"There is no question we have a lot of work to do in order to
get back on a winning track. We need to do better by training
better and performing better," added Astudillo.
The Bulls (4-4, 0-1 MAC) will continue play on the road as they
face Big Four rival St. Bonaventure at McGraw-Jennings Field on
Wednesday, September 30 at 4:00 pm.
