Alumni Arena is home to the UB’s men's and women's basketball teams, wrestling team and the women's volleyball team. The largest "free-floating" hardwood floor in the United States at the time it was built, it features basketball, volleyball and badminton courts circled by a 200-meter track and seating for 6,100 spectators following renovations during the summer of 2004.
For basketball, Alumni Arena ranks as the second-largest on-campus facility in the state of New York, behind only Syracuse's Carrier Dome.
A record crowd of 8,971 was on hand to watch the UB men's basketball team defeat Northern Illinois, 90-73, in a first-round Mid-American Conference Tournament game on March 8, 2004. The UB women's basketball attendance record was set when the Bulls hosted North Carolina on November 17, 2000. A record crowd of 4,017 fans, the largest crowd ever assembled to watch a women's basketball game at any of the Western New York-area Big 4 schools, witnessed the Bulls' 95-89 upset of the 22nd-ranked Tar Heels.
In 2011, the University began to renovate the inner-workings of the arena to enhance the game-day atmosphere, adding state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems as well the installation of a new video and scoring system. The eye-catching centerpiece of the renovation is the new four-sided, center-hung LED display, that provides live video, instant replays, and animations.
The displays measure eight feet high and 14 feet wide and will be accompanied by an LED ring underneath which measures 3 feet high and 52 feet in diameter. Rounding out the scoring system will be new fixed-digit displays in both end-zones and seventy feet of LED scorer’s tables at court level. The video board made its debut on Jan. 7, 2012, when the Bulls beat MAC East rival Kent State 66-65.
During the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, the UB men’s basketball team rattled off 26 straight home wins, which at the time was tied for the longest streak in the nation. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the men’s and women’s basketball teams have combined for 150 wins inside Alumni Arena.
In the current configuration, an arena-record 6,709 spectators witnessed Buffalo’s 84-73 victory over Bowling Green on March 8, 2019, which capped off a 14-0 season at home during the 2018-19 season.
