NEW YORK, NY – The State University of New York, Buffalo cross country teams will compete Friday at the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Van Cortland Park.
The women's six-kilometer race will take place at 12 pm, while the men's 10K will follow at 1 pm. Further details can be found on the championship central website. UB will be one of 41 women's teams in attendance, while the men are one of 40 squads running.
A season ago, while competing on the same course, the women took home 19th in a field of 42 teams and the men placed 23rd out of 39 competing crews.
Both teams are coming off strong performances at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships held Nov. 1.
The men's team finished fourth out of nine and the women placed seventh out of 12 for the third consecutive season. Both finishes matched the second-best showings in program history. The men's finish was the finest since a program-best bronze in 2011. It bettered the Bulls' fifth-place showings in 2012 and 2013.
Tallying 102 points, just three shy of tying for third place, the men were led by sophomore Alec Peinkofer with a career-best eight-kilometer time of 24:52. His 12th-place finish out of 80 competitors earned him Second-Team All-MAC honors.
The UB women's team, who ran just four points behind sixth-place Western Michigan, was once again paced by Corinne Birchard. The sophomore placed 27th out of 104 runners with a 6K time of 21:41.
