BRONX, NY – The University at Buffalo cross country teams competed Saturday morning at the 20th Annual Dr. John "Paddy" Doyle / Iona College Meet of Champions at Cortlandt Park. The men's team raced to a fifth-place finish out of 23 teams, while the women placed sixth in a field of 20.
Junior Cameron Bruce paced the Bulls with a stellar performance, placing ninth out of 205 runners on the eight-kilometer course. He crossed the finish line in 25:58.10. Sophomore Alec Peinkofer ran second for UB with a 22nd-place finish of 26:25.10.
Sophomore Pier Berkmans finished fifth for the Bulls with a 46th-place run of 26:59.10. Freshman Andrew Berge followed in 51st place in 27:02.00. Junior Austin Coneys rounded out the Bulls' top seven with a finish of 27:29.00 to place 77th.
In the women's first 6K race of the season, sophomores Melinda Wheeler and Corinne Birchard finished consecutively in 30th and 31st out of 163 runners. Wheeler clocked a 23:24.70 finish and Birchard followed in 23:31.20.
Sophomore Meagan Hopkins ran 40th in 23:41.80. Classmate Amy Shaw placed 45th in 23:55.90 and senior Gabby Leo placed 48th with a time of 24:02.70. Junior Meaghan Wessel and sophomore Bailey Kemp finished sixth and seventh for the Bulls. Wessel crossed the finish line 59th in 24:20.50 and Kemp did so with a 64th-place finish of 24:24.90.
The men's team placed eight spots better than MAC opponent Kent State, while the women's squad raced ahead of regionally-ranked Albany.
The Bulls next race on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh.
