Volleyball Team Huddle

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule this weekend when they head to Charleston, SC for the Charleston Invitational.

The Bulls will bring a 5-3 record into the weekend after winning two of three matches at the Georgetown Classic, including victories over Coppin State and Georgetown, out of the Big East Conference.  Junior Megan Wernette was one of two Bulls named to the All-Tournament team and she currently leads the Bulls in hitting percentage at .368, while sharing the team lead in blocks.

Sophomore Polina Prokudina leads Buffalo with 128 kills, averaging 4.00 per set, while freshman Andrea Mitrovic has 108 kills on the year.  Sophomore Scout McLerran leads the team with 317 assists and junior Larra Bickelhaupt leads the team with 110 digs and 12 service aces.

The Bulls will open the tournament on Friday at 4:30pm when they face the Mercer Bears.  Mercer is 4-4 on the year coming off a win over Northwestern State at the Ole Miss Classic last week, while losing a tough five-set match to the host Rebels.  Paige Alsten leads the Bears with 122 kills and a .414 hitting percentage.

Buffalo will play two matches on Saturday beginning at 10:30am against Appalachian State.  The Mountaineers are 4-7 on the year following a five-set loss to North Dakota State last Saturday.  Earlier in the day, Appalachian State defeated George Washington in five sets.  The Mountaineers have three players already in triple figures in kills led by Kara Spicer, who has 153, and Melissa McMath, who has 150.

UB will conclude the weekend when it faces the host team, the College of Charleston Cougars, at 7:00 pm on Saturday evening.  Charleston is 7-3 on the season following a 3-0 sweep over Kent State on Sunday.  Earlier this season, the Cougars had a five-set win over Baylor, who was receiving votes in the NCAA national rankings.  Lauren Freed and Krissy Mummey lead the team with 109 kills each.

There will be live stats for all three matches, with links on UBBulls.com.  Buffalo will open MAC play next weekend inside Alumni Arena with matches against Ohio and Kent State.
