BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament with a 4-0 loss to #2 Akron. UB concludes the season with a 15-8 record.
The Bulls got out to a quick start to doubles with a 6-0 shutout at three courtesy of junior Emel Abibula and freshman His-Yuan Shih. Akron then came back and won the first two doubles matches, 6-3.
In singles action, the Zips took a 2-0 advantage with a straight sets victory at three, followed by a victory at five. Akron clinched the match at first singles as the MAC Player of the Year Sophia Geier won 6-4, 6-2.
UB took the opening set at second singles as freshman Pia Schwarz swept her opponent 6-0, playing in a third set when play was stopped. Shih also fought in her match as she overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set at four, winning her second set 6-4.
"I am extremely proud of the way this group competed today against a very tough Akron team," said head coach Kristen Maines. "The turnaround that we showed from two weeks has been nothing short of amazing and that is a testament to championship mindset of these players. We went out with no regrets!"
Akron has advanced to the MAC Championship match where it will face top-seeded Miami (OH), who defeated Ball State, 4-0 on Saturday morning. The two teams will meet at 12pm on Sunday.
