BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team placed two on the postseason All-MAC awards, which were announced on Thursday as senior Chantal Martinez Blanco and freshman Pia Schwarz were both named second-team All-MAC selections.
For Martinez Blanco, this is the fourth straight year that the senior has been honored by the MAC. A mainstay at first singles all year, Martinez Blanco went 13-8 at first singles and 16-11 overall entering this weekend's MAC Tournament. She currently has 80 singles victories for her career, one of only four players in school history to achieve that feat. In doubles action, Martinez Blanco played the entire season with freshman Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou as they went 14-5 at first doubles and 19-7 overall.
"It's a huge honor for a student-athlete to be honored all four years and I couldn't be more proud of all that Chantal has done for this program," said head coach Kristen Maines. "I am glad the coaches around the league have recognized what she has meant to Buffalo and the MAC as a whole."
Schwarz earns her first MAC postseason honor as she currently leads the Bulls in singles victories with 18. Schwarz played the majority of the year at third singles where she went 12-4 before moving into the second singles position towards the end of the year. In doubles, Schwarz has tallied a 13-11 record as she has been a mainstay at second doubles for UB this year.
"To be recognized as a freshman is a huge honor for Pia," said Maines. "It is amazing to see the improvement she has made this year from the first time she stepped on the court to this past weekend when she dominated her match at second singles. I am excited to see the improvement that she will continue to make over her career."
Buffalo begins action in the MAC Tournament on Friday afternoon as the sixth-seeded Bulls face #3 Western Michigan at 2pm in the MAC quarterfinals. The match will be played at either Sweet Home High School or Miller Tennis Center depending on weather.
