BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo will host the 2019 Mid-American Conference women's tennis championships this weekend, with action getting underway Friday. As last year's regular season champions, the Bulls earned the right to host this year's event.
Buffalo earned the #6 seed in the this year's tournament and will begin play on Friday against #3 Western Michigan in the second of two MAC Quarterfinals, beginning at 2pm. Opening action on Friday at 10am will be #4 Ball State and #5 Toledo. Both #1 Miami (OH) and #2 Akron have earned byes to Saturday's MAC semifinals.
The Bulls are hosting the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2008, a year where the Bulls also entered the tournament as the number 6 seed and responded by winning their first ever conference title. UB is also trying to claim the MAC Tournament conference crown for the third straight year, a feat last done by Miami (OH) from 2013-15.
UB defeated Western Michigan 5-2 in the only regular season meeting between the two teams this year. The winner of UB-WMU will face #2 Akron on Saturday at 2pm in the second of two semifinals. The winner of the Ball State-Toledo match will face the #1 seed Miami (OH) at 10am on Saturday morning. The two semifinal winners will meet for the league title on Sunday at 12pm. The winner of the championship match will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Depending on weather, the championships may take part at two different locations. The primary outdoor venue for the 2019 MAC Championships is Sweet Home High School. Should weather interfere and the matches need to be played indoors, those matches will take place at the Miller Tennis Center.
