WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team played strong doubles on Saturday afternoon, but struggled in singles in a 6-1 loss to West Virginia at Miller Tennis Center. The loss drops UB to 6-2 on the year.
Buffalo swept through doubles action beginning at first doubles where senior Chantal Martinez Blanco and freshman Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou won easily, 6-2. UB won at second and third doubles by identical 6-4 scores. Freshman Pia Schwarz and senior Arianna Paules Aldrey took the victory at second doubles and freshman Hsin-Yuan Shih and junior Emel Abibula won a third doubles.
West Virginia came back and exceled in singles play, winning all six matches, including four of those in straight sets. Wins at two, one, four, and five clinched the match for the Mountaineers, but the Bulls went into third sets and both third and sixth singles. Abibula won her first set at third singles before dropping the final two, and senior Sanjana Sudhir won her first set 6-3 sat sixth singles, but then fell 6-4 in the second and 10-7 in the tiebreaker in the third.
The Bulls will next head to Rutgers on Friday afternoon for a 12:00 pm match with the Scarlet Knights.
