MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team won its 13th straight match on Saturday as the Bulls advanced to the Mid-American Conference Championship match with a 4-1 win over Bowling Green in the MAC Semifinals. The Bulls will play for the title on Sunday at 12pm as they go for their second straight tournament crown.
The Bulls had to come back from an early deficit as the fourth-seeded Falcons overcame an early deficit to win the doubles point. Buffalo won easily at first doubles as Chantal Martinez Blanco and Lolade Ogungbesan scored a 6-2 win, but the Falcons then won 6-3 at three, setting up a decisive match at two. The Bulls held an early lead and had several match points, but Bowling Green came back and won a tiebreaker, giving BG the early 1-0 lead.
Buffalo, playing for the first time ever as the #1 seed, continued to show why they are having the best season in school history in singles as UB dominated, winning the first set in five of the six matches. The Bulls got on the board as senior Tanja Stojanovska had an easy win at second singles as she won 6-0, 6-2. The Bulls then got a victory at sixth singles from junior Arianna Paules Aldrey, who won, 6-1, 6-1.
UB got within one point of clinching at third singles as Ogungbesan won 6-2, 6-2, and then sophomore Emel Abibula came away with the clincher at fourth singles as she won her match, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Sanjana Sudhir led in her match, 6-4, 4-2 when play was stopped and Martinez Blanco was in a third set at one singles as she overcame a first set loss to win her second set, 6-1.
For the second straight season, Buffalo will meet Miami in the MAC Championship match as the second-seeded RedHawks defeated Toledo, 4-2, in their semifinals. The contest will take place at Noon at Ball State. The match will air on ESPN+ as long as it is played outdoors.
